Devon Screen Watch

Unique opportunity to see spring secrets live

Probably for the first time ever Birds of Prey can be watched live on CCTV as they prepare for the spring nesting season. Already preening themselves for their TV debut at the Woodlands Falconry Centre the four Birds of Prey have cameras focused on their daily most intimate spring preparations through nest building, sitting on eggs to chick hatching.

Studying and handling Birds of Prey for a lifetime Woodlands Falconer Geoff Pearson and his colleague Lyn have worked through the winter to set up the live Observation Programme for wild life enthusiasts, families and schools.

“We are very excited about the Screen Watch Project” Geoff said “ even the smallest child can be Bill Oddie watching these shy birds at very close quarters building their nests, laying eggs and perhaps even catching that special moment when the chicks hatch.”

“Visitors can see how climate change is altering the mating habits of the birds as they are already getting into the spring mode at least two weeks earlier than normal.”

“The latest news is that Sioux the Ferruginous hawk from the American Plains is going broody, her mate Cheyenne is certainly in his full spring plumage and getting very excited. Sioux will be on camera together with Amber our magnificent European Owl, and there is shy Catrina the rare Siberian Turkamanian Owl who is very secretive, our favourite little owl in the centre is the Boobook from Australia. Children will be fascinated by this cross section of our large collection of birds as they all have different habits, ways of building their nests and bringing up their young.”

Geoff and Lyn will be on hand commentating on the Screen Watch Project as it happens live, weekends during the winter, everyday from 24th March.
